Do not buy one publisher's complete package
The all-in-one compulsory packages are heavily marketed and rarely the best value. Caravan and Dogar are good at different things, and most successful candidates use both.
-
Caravan — academic depth. Chughtai's grammar and Islamic Studies books are the standards, and Ikram Rabbani's work is the reference for Pakistan Affairs and IR.
-
Dogar — exam structure. Solved past papers, high-scoring guides, and the examiner-report commentary that shows you why answers lost marks.
-
Jahangir World Times — current affairs, which cannot be prepared from a static book at all.
Where candidates actually lose
The English Essay paper has the lowest pass rate of any compulsory paper, year after year — and it is the one people prepare for least systematically. Reading model essays is not preparation. Writing timed essays and having them marked is. Précis is the same: technique-driven and routinely neglected.
Current affairs is the other recurring failure. It cannot be crammed in the final month, because examiners reward the ability to place events in context. That only comes from reading consistently over a year.
A realistic starter set
- Chughtai for English grammar and précis mechanics — Rs. 2,200
- Chughtai for Islamic Studies — Rs. 1,100
- Mian Shafiq for General Science & Ability — Rs. 1,475
- A current affairs subscription, read monthly rather than stockpiled
- Solved past papers, to see the level and phrasing examiners actually use
- Optional subject texts, chosen after your combination is settled
That comes to roughly Rs. 6,000–7,000 for a working compulsory-subject base. Free delivery applies at Rs. 3,000, so any two of these ship free.
On editions
Pakistan Affairs, Islamic Studies and the essay material stay stable. Current affairs and general knowledge date within months. Buy recent where the content moves; do not overpay for currency where it does not.
