Academic or General Training?
Choose before you buy. Academic is for university admission and professional registration; General Training is for migration and work. Listening and Speaking are identical across both, but Reading and Writing differ substantially — Academic Writing Task 1 asks you to describe a chart or process, while General Task 1 is a letter. Buying the wrong stream means practising the wrong task type entirely.
The Cambridge series is the core
The Cambridge IELTS books are past papers released by the exam board itself. Nothing else replicates the real test as closely, and most candidates who improve substantially do so by working through them under timed conditions rather than by reading more strategy. Start with the most recent volumes — the earlier ones remain useful but the question style has drifted over the years.
Where Pakistani candidates usually lose marks

Writing Task 2 — the single largest score gap. Band scores stall here more than anywhere else, and it is the section that most needs feedback from someone other than yourself.

Listening — accent range rather than difficulty. Regular exposure to British, Australian and Canadian speakers closes this quickly.

Reading — almost entirely a timing problem. The techniques are learnable; the speed only comes from timed practice.

Speaking — under-practised because it needs a partner. Record yourself if you have no one to practise with.

Which IELTS book is best?
The Cambridge IELTS practice test series, without much competition. Add one skills book for whichever section you are weakest in — usually Writing.
How many Cambridge volumes should I do?
Four to six recent volumes, worked through under proper timed conditions, is more valuable than owning the entire series and skimming it.
How long should I prepare?
Six to eight weeks of consistent work is typical for candidates already comfortable in English. Candidates targeting a jump of more than one band should plan on longer.
Are these original prints?
Yes. Photocopied IELTS books are common in Pakistan and frequently have missing audio access codes, which makes the Listening sections unusable.
