What the GRE actually rewards

The GRE is section-adaptive: your performance on the first section of each type determines the difficulty of the second. That has one practical consequence worth knowing before you start — the opening section carries more weight than its question count suggests, and rushing it to bank time is the most common self-inflicted score loss.

Building a study set

  • The official ETS guide — retired real questions, the closest thing to the exam. This should be the backbone of any GRE preparation.
  • A quantitative review — the maths is school level; the difficulty lies in how the questions are worded and the traps built into the answer choices.
  • Vocabulary material — the single biggest gap for most Pakistani candidates. Text completion and sentence equivalence are pure vocabulary, and no amount of reasoning skill compensates for not knowing the word.
  • Full-length timed practice — where most of the score gain actually comes from.

GRE or GMAT?

Most business schools now accept either. The GRE suits candidates who are also applying to non-business graduate programmes, and its quantitative section is generally considered gentler. The GMAT remains the more established MBA route. If you are applying only to MBA programmes, the GMAT is the safer default; for anything broader, the GRE gives you more options from one test.

When to start

Three to four months of consistent preparation is typical for candidates studying alongside work or final-year study. Vocabulary in particular needs spaced repetition over months rather than a final push. Work backwards from your application deadline and leave room to re-sit.

Frequently asked questions

Which GRE book should I start with?
The official ETS guide, always. Third-party books teach strategy well, but only ETS questions are written by the people who write the exam.

How much does vocabulary matter?
A great deal, and more than most candidates expect. It is the area where Pakistani students most often lose verbal marks and also the area where consistent daily work produces the clearest gain.

Do I need the latest edition?
The GRE format has been stable, so slightly older editions remain usable for content. Prefer recent editions for practice tests so the timing matches the current shorter exam.
