The Writer Who Named Modern Life

Franz Kafka (1883–1924) died young, published almost nothing in his lifetime, and asked his friend Max Brod to burn all his manuscripts. Brod refused — and gave us The Metamorphosis, The Trial, and The Castle, three of the most influential works of the 20th century.

The word "Kafkaesque" now describes anything absurd, bureaucratic, or nightmarish. That's how deeply his vision has shaped how we understand modern life.

Where to Start with Kafka

1. The Metamorphosis (~70 pages)

A man wakes up transformed into a giant insect. His family's reaction is more disturbing than the transformation itself. Kafka's most-read work, and the perfect starter.

2. The Trial (~250 pages)

Josef K. is arrested for a crime that's never named, prosecuted by a court that's never explained, and slowly consumed by a system he can't understand. Chillingly relevant.

3. The Castle (~350 pages, unfinished)

A land surveyor tries to reach an authority in a mysterious castle. Never gets there. Kafka's most Kafkaesque novel.

4. Short Stories

  • A Hunger Artist
  • In the Penal Colony
  • The Judgment
  • A Country Doctor

Which Should You Read First?
