Why photocopied medical books cost you more than they save
Medical textbooks are expensive, and photocopied sets circulate widely in Pakistani medical colleges. The problem is specific rather than general: the diagnostic content of these books is visual. Histology plates, dermatological images, radiographs and anatomical illustrations are the reason the book exists, and they do not survive reproduction. A photocopied Robbins with grey, unresolvable histology is not a cheaper Robbins — it is a different and much less useful book.
Regional editions are the honest way to save
Many major medical publishers release authorised South Asian editions at a fraction of the international list price, with identical content on lower-cost paper. Where these exist we stock them. That is the legitimate route to an affordable original, and it is what we recommend to students weighing up a photocopy.
Editions matter, but not equally
Anatomy and physiology change slowly — an edition or two behind is rarely a problem. Pharmacology, clinical guidelines and licensing exam preparation change quickly, and an out-of-date edition can teach you superseded protocols. Prioritise currency where the content actually moves.
