Salt Houses is Hala Alyan's debut novel, a multigenerational family saga that follows the al-Nuri family across decades and displacement. The narrative spans from 1982 Lebanon through the early 2000s, tracing how political upheaval and exile reshape identity, memory, and belonging for parents and their four adult children scattered across continents.

Alyan structures the novel through interconnected chapters, each centered on a different family member - Aimee, Khalil, Elie, and Manar - as they navigate love, loss, and the impossible task of maintaining family bonds across borders. The story moves between Beirut, the Gulf, London, and America, exploring how displacement becomes both rupture and strange new possibility. Language itself becomes a character in the book; code-switching and untranslatable Arabic words punctuate the prose, reflecting the fragmented experience of diaspora.

The work was shortlisted for the PEN/Hemingway Award and received wide critical recognition for its intimate portrayal of how large historical events (war, economic collapse, migration) fracture and reform intimate relationships. Alyan's sentences are precise and sometimes startling in their emotional clarity, refusing easy sentiment while honoring the resilience embedded in daily survival.
