Best Anatomy Books for MBBS in Pakistan — Which One to Actually Buy (2026)
Every first-year MBBS student in Pakistan gets handed the same advice: buy Chaurasia. It is mostly right, and it is also incomplete — because anatomy is three different subjects wearing one name, and no single book covers all three well.
This is what each book is actually for, what it costs here, and what you can safely skip in first year.
The short answer
If you are starting first year and want to buy once:
- BD Chaurasia's Human Anatomy — Rs. 745. Your main regional anatomy text. Non-negotiable.
- General Anatomy by Laiq Hussain Siddiqui — Rs. 1,295. Covers the general anatomy your professors examine in the first few months, which Chaurasia does not.
- An atlas — borrow one before you buy. See below.
That is the honest minimum. Everything else is for people with a specific problem to solve.
Regional anatomy: Chaurasia vs Snell
These are the two your seniors will argue about.
BD Chaurasia (Rs. 745) is the Pakistani and Indian standard. Dissection-oriented, organised the way your practicals are organised, and written at a level that assumes you are learning this for the first time. Most Pakistani MBBS curricula are effectively built around it. If you buy one regional text, buy this.
Snell's Clinical Anatomy by Regions (Rs. 1,595) is better written, better organised and far stronger on clinical correlation. It is the book you will appreciate more in third year than in first. Students who find Chaurasia dry usually get on much better with Snell.
Gray's Anatomy for Students (Rs. 3,600) is the most beautiful of the three and the most expensive. Superb illustrations, excellent explanations. It is not the efficient choice for a Pakistani MBBS exam, and at this price most students should not make it their first purchase.
General anatomy — the part students forget to buy
Before regional anatomy begins, you are taught general anatomy: bone, cartilage, joints, muscle, the vascular and lymphatic systems as categories rather than regions. Chaurasia Volume 4 covers some of it; most Pakistani students use Laiq Hussain Siddiqui's General Anatomy (Rs. 1,295) instead, because it is written for exactly this syllabus.
Essence Anatomy (Rs. 1,295) is the condensed alternative, useful close to exams.
Neuroanatomy
Neuroanatomy defeats more first-year students than any other part of the subject, and the regional texts handle it badly.
- Snell's Clinical Neuroanatomy — Rs. 1,295. The standard, and genuinely clear.
- Vishram Singh's Textbook of Clinical Neuroanatomy — Rs. 1,550. Shorter, more diagram-led, popular with students who want less prose.
Histology
Histology is a separate skill from anatomy: you are learning to recognise slides, not to memorise text.
- Eroschenko's Atlas of Histology — Rs. 1,550. Photomicrographs beside labelled diagrams, which is what you need for a practical.
- Netter's Histology Flash Cards — Rs. 1,595. Expensive for cards, but slide recognition is exactly the kind of thing flash cards are good at.
For the viva and the MCQ paper
Reading a textbook does not prepare you for being asked questions about it out loud.
- Anatomy MCQs with Explanations Vol 1 (Rs. 1,245) and Vol 2 (Rs. 1,295) — the explanations matter more than the questions.
- BRS Gross Anatomy — Rs. 1,295. Outline format with questions; also the standard for USMLE Step 1.
- Snell's Clinical Anatomy: An Illustrated Review — Rs. 1,550.
- Surface and Radiological Anatomy — Rs. 1,295. Narrow, but surface marking questions are free marks once you have read it.
If you are struggling rather than revising
Clinical Anatomy Made Ridiculously Simple (Rs. 1,295) is not a replacement for a textbook and does not pretend to be. It is for the student who has read the chapter three times and still cannot hold it together. Read it alongside Chaurasia, not instead of it.
Nursing, allied health and BS programmes
If you are not on an MBBS course, Chaurasia is more than you need. Ross & Wilson Anatomy and Physiology in Health and Illness (Rs. 1,295) is the standard for nursing and allied health in Pakistan and covers anatomy and physiology together.
For dentistry, Wheeler's Dental Anatomy (Rs. 1,845) and Netter's Head & Neck Flash Cards (Rs. 1,710) are the ones that matter.

Common questions
Which anatomy book is best for first year MBBS in Pakistan?
BD Chaurasia for regional anatomy, plus Laiq Hussain Siddiqui for general anatomy. That covers the first-year syllabus as it is actually taught here.
Chaurasia or Snell?
Chaurasia if you want to match your dissection schedule and your examiners. Snell if you want to understand it. Students who can afford both usually read Chaurasia for the exam and Snell for the clinical sense.
Do I need Gray's?
No. It is excellent and it is Rs. 3,600. Buy it in a later year if you want it, not in first year.
Do I need an atlas as well as a textbook?
Yes, but borrow before buying. Some students work entirely from Chaurasia's diagrams; others cannot. Find out which you are before spending.
How many volumes is Chaurasia?
Four in the standard set: upper limb and thorax, lower limb abdomen and pelvis, head neck and brain, and general anatomy. Check which volumes a listing includes before you order anywhere.
Are these original prints?
Yes. Medical textbooks are among the most heavily photocopied books in Pakistan — check the paper weight and the colour plates on any copy you are offered elsewhere.
