Aristotle Never Said "We Are What We Repeatedly Do" — Here's Who Did

The short answer

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."

Almost everyone credits this to Aristotle. Aristotle did not write it.

It was written by Will Durant in The Story of Philosophy, published in 1926 — a summary of Aristotle's argument in the Nicomachean Ethics, in Durant's own words. Durant was explaining Aristotle, not quoting him.

So the idea is Aristotle's. The sentence is Durant's.

Where the confusion came from

Durant's book was a bestseller — one of the most widely read philosophy books of the twentieth century. He wrote in the first person, summarising each philosopher's position in plain language.

The line sits in his chapter on Aristotle, immediately after a discussion of the Nicomachean Ethics. Read quickly, it looks like a quotation. Repeated often enough, it became one.

What Aristotle actually argued, in Book II of the Ethics, is that virtue is a hexis — a settled disposition formed by repeated action. You become just by doing just things, brave by doing brave things. Durant compressed that into fourteen words, and the compression is what travelled.

Three more quotes credited to the wrong person

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world"

This one is real. Nelson Mandela said it, in a 1990 speech. But the shortened version people search for — "education is the key to success" — is a paraphrase that has drifted a long way from what he said, and gets attributed to him, to Aristotle, and to several others.

"In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity"

Universally credited to Albert Einstein. There is no reliable source for it in anything he wrote or is recorded as saying. The Einstein archives have never verified it, and it does not appear in his collected papers.

It is one of dozens of aphorisms attached to Einstein's name because the name makes the sentence sound authoritative.

"The unexamined life is not worth living"

This one is genuine — Socrates, at his trial, as recorded by Plato in the Apology. Worth including because so many real quotes get doubted once people learn how many famous ones are invented.

Why any of this matters

Not because attribution is a technicality. Because knowing who actually said something tells you where to read more.
