Book 1, and the one the whole series rests on. We had the 8-book collection and Dragonfly in Amber, but not book 1 on its own until now.

Claire Randall is on a second honeymoon in the Scottish Highlands in 1945, rebuilding a marriage the war interrupted. She walks through a circle of standing stones at Craigh na Dun and comes out in 1743, into a country on its way to Culloden, where an Englishwoman alone is assumed to be a spy.

To survive it she marries a young Highlander called Jamie Fraser — and the problem the rest of the series is built on is that she has a husband waiting two hundred years away.

Worth knowing before you buy

It is long — around 850 pages — and it is adult: explicit, and frank about violence. It is also historical fiction first and romance second, which surprises people who came to it from the television series.

Reading order

Outlander → Dragonfly in Amber → Voyager → Drums of Autumn, and on through eight books. The 8-book collection set works out cheaper if you intend to read the lot.
