Buy The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid online in Pakistan — one of the most widely read novels ever written by a Pakistani author, shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2007 and taught on university courses around the world.
The whole book is one conversation. Changez, a Pakistani man, sits down with an uneasy American stranger at a cafe in Anarkali, Lahore, and talks across a single evening. He describes Princeton, a high-paying job in New York, a woman named Erica, and how all of it changed after September 2001. Hamid never lets you hear the American's replies, which is the point — you supply the suspicion yourself.
At 224 pages it is short enough to read in one or two sittings. A good entry point if you have not read Hamid before, and it reads very differently in Lahore than it does abroad.
