The Tin Drum

The Tin Drum is Günter Grass's debut novel, published in 1962, and remains one of the most significant works of twentieth-century German literature. The narrative follows Oskar Matzerath, who decides at age three to stop growing as a protest against the adult world. Armed with a tin drum and a piercing scream, Oskar becomes a witness to and participant in the chaos of twentieth-century history - from the rise of Nazism through World War II and beyond.
