The Wandering Falcon by Jamil Ahmad is a debut novel that traces the life of Tor Baz, a man born into exile in the borderlands between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Published in 2011, the novel follows Tor Baz across decades as he moves between tribal territories, refugee camps, and smuggling routes, encountering the fractured communities and forgotten people of the region.

Ahmad constructs the narrative through interconnected episodes rather than a traditional plot arc, allowing readers to witness how geopolitical upheaval shapes individual lives. The prose captures the austere landscape and the codes of honor and survival that govern the borderlands. Tor Baz himself remains largely unknowable - a mirror through which Ahmad examines displacement, identity, and the consequences of larger historical forces on ordinary people.

The novel won the Man Booker International Prize in 2015, several years after its initial publication, bringing wider recognition to Ahmad's restrained and deeply observant storytelling. It stands as one of the few contemporary English-language works to give sustained narrative attention to the Afghan-Pakistani borderlands and the lives of those caught within them.
